Match Reports

Friday 30th October

Saturday 31st October

Armagh 4ths 1 Randalstown 4ths 0

With only a handful of points separating these two teams in the league, the Randalstown girls were well aware that winning this match was going to be no easy feat. The long, tiring drive to Armagh, left the girls lethargic as the match began, having a knock on effect on their usually excellent performance. Randalstown had their share of attacking breaks, however their target remained untouched. As the first half drew to a close, Armagh were awarded a free hit, just yards from their attacking circle, as a result of this, and some questionable play, that Armagh battled their way to the backboard.

The second half began, and Randalstown again showed their dominance, however they were unable to make a mark on the score sheet. Both teams yo- yoed the ball up and down the pitch, yet at the final whistle the score remained 1-0 to Armagh. This was the first game the girls have failed to secure a win in, and hopefully the girls will return to their winning form in their next league fixture which is away to Grosvenor 3rds.
The team would like to extend their thanks to Lenny McKee for making the journey to umpire this match.

Randalstown 5ths 11 Newry 2nds 4
The fifths travelled to Newry on Saturday morning to play their first round of the Minor Cup. With the push back at 11.30am, it was an early start for the visitors, and Randalstown were caught napping when they found themselves a goal down within the first 2 minutes. However this setback was short lived and it soon became apparent that Randalstown were not going to let themselves get beaten.
The equaliser came in the ninth minute when Karen Swann took the ball up the pitch, gave a long pass to Amy Mellor on the right wing and her first time cross to Emily Reid resulted in Emily getting her first goal of the morning.
Two minutes later Randalstown were ahead with Gillian Weir’s persistence paying off and when she won the ball she crossed to Samantha McCormack. She again found Emily in the circle waiting to score her second.
Newry were still hopeful of getting back into the game, but Rhianna Brown was stopping every ball down the left wing and Beth McFarland was also stopping any attack down the right wing and also creating attacking moves. Meanwhile fourteen year old Gillian Weir and fifteen year old Emily Reid were causing havoc for the Newry team. Both girls play excellently together, and their work rate on and off the ball is commendable for 2 players of such a young age. Emily is always looking for the ball and her goal tally of 15 in just 5 games is proof of this.
The team scored three more goals before halftime. Megan Lamont passed to Emily. This time her shot at goal was saved but Amy Mellor knocked in the rebound. Emily’s eagerness resulted in her intercepting a Newry hit out and scoring and a few minutes later she got another when after taking the ball up the pitch she had a one-two with Gillian and then took the ball around the keeper to make the halftime score 5-1.
Gillian deservedly got on the score sheet right at the start of the second half with a solo goal when she ran all the way up the pitch and scored.
Samantha, making a welcome return to Club hockey again had a run up the pitch, linking with Rhianna. The initial shot was saved but Megan Lamont got the rebound.
Amy then got her second following a penalty corner. The first few shots were saved but Amy finished off the move. Emily scored again following good work between Samantha, Megan and herself.
Randalstown were caught out again and Newry broke free and scored.
Megan scored following a free hit and was involved in the next goal when she took the ball up the pitch and crossed for Emily to complete Randalstown’s scoring with her sixth goal of the game.
The Randalstown team tired and perhaps the urgency was no longer there but they allowed Newry to come in and score two late goals.
Once again another good performance from all the players. Erica Mailey and Lizzie Logan in defence had time to advise their young team. Many thanks must go to Isobel Millar for playing in goals despite suffering from an injury. Thanks also to David Mellor for umpiring the game.
This week the team are at home to Grosvenor in the league.

Randalstown U12s
Randalstown U12s had some new players with them on Sunday 24th October when they travelled to Magherafelt to start their new season. The spectators welcomed the move to the indoor Arena as they were kept nice and dry!

The first match as was against Ballyclare. Randalstown passed and moved the ball well especially as this was the first time they all played as a team. The first goal came when Randalstown were awarded a long corner. Rebecca Hall passed quickly to Emma Clyde who struck the ball well and found Zoe McDowell who confidently sweeped the ball into the net.

Lois Carey, Sophie Robinson, Erin Getty, Zoe McDowell and Rebecca Hall kept the Ballyclare Goalkeeper busy but it was Emma Clyde who outwitted the good keeper and her reverse hit strike went into the back of the net. Final score 2-0.

Their second match was against Derg Valley who failed to turn up which meant the girls had a two hour wait for their last match against Harlequins.

This proved to be a harder battle as defenders, Emma Olliver and Nicola Carlisle, along with keeper Rebecca Adaszkiewicz had a much busier match than the first one. Unfortunately Harlequins were quicker in their passing and moving and managed to work their way up the pitch and placed the ball skillfully passed Rebecca into the net. However Rebecca made several great saves determined to keep the score down. Final score 1-0 to Harlequins.

Girls and parents would like to thank Emma McClurkin for umpiring and coach Davey Allen for taking the time to coach the girls.
